Shirley Roberts

Shirley Mae Roberts, 91, of Chiefland passed away on April 02, 2021 at the E T York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville after a short illness. She was born in Eckleson, North Dakota to Leonard J. and Hilda Rumer Hesch. She graduated from St Catherines Catholic School in Valley City, North Dakota in 1947 and from the nursing program at Valley City State College and Mercy Hospital in 1950. She practiced as a registered nurse for over 60 years in various areas including the hospital, occupational health, public health and as an instructor of LPNs, finishing her career in primary care, and retiring in 2010. She was a member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, St. John the Evangelist Conference and she had many hobbies including gardening, crocheting and a love of word search puzzles. She attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Chiefland, and was a founding member of the parish. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Bertel Eugene Sorenson, her second husband James R. Roberts, her brothers Delmar, James and Leroy Hesch, and her daughter in law Jackie Barber. She is survived by her daughters Jean(Roberts) Gruver and her husband Mark, Gail (Sorenson) Gruver and her husband Rex, all of Gainesville, her step daughter Linda (Roberts) Kish and her husband Nelson of Cocoa Beach, her brother Orville Hesch and his wife Lois of Avila Beach, California, her grandson Matthew Barber of Chiefland and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Chiefland at 10:00 am on April 9, with a graveside service to follow at Hardeetown Cemetery in Chiefland.
