Alice Rogers

Alice Mildred Dorsett Rogers, 87, passed from this life Friday, April 6, 2018 at her home in Williston, Florida. She was born in Daytona Beach, Florida on November 30, 1930 to parents Roy and Christia Dorsett. Alice was raised on a farm near Branford, Florida along with her brothers and sisters. Many summers were spent cropping tobacco, corn, and cotton on the family farm and assisting neighbors with their crops. Alice's faith in God was nurtured from an early age. She attended church with her family and was active in all church functions throughout her formative years. Her strong faith in God remained throughout her life. Alice knew while in high school she wanted to pursue nursing as a career. She attended Stetson University in Deland, Florida for one year. She then studied and worked 3 years at Riverside Hospital School of Nursing in Jacksonville, Florida. She received her nursing diploma in September of 1952. Her first nursing job was as a public health nurse in Levy County where she started 3 days after graduation. She traveled the entire county for 13 and 1/2 years, making house calls and treating all ages of patients. She was known as the "shot lady" to Levy County students. Alice's next job was at the Williston Memorial Hospital, where she remained for 21 and 1/2 years. She worked in all areas of the hospital including Emergency Room, ICU, Surgery, Director of Nurses, and Assistant Administrator. Her passion was always in the direct care of patients. Alice decided to finish her career working for the State of Florida at Tacachale in Gainesville, Florida. She loved giving direct care to special needs patients. She retired with great reluctance in 1993. She maintained her nursing license for over 60 years and continued to renew it after retirement. Alice was married to Ferris Rogers (her Beautiful Blue Eyes Man), a happy union for 59 years before his passing. They raised 4 children along with their jobs and duties of a small farm in Williston. She enjoyed spending time with her 5 grandchildren and her 3 great grandchildren. She loved to read, play board games and cards, sewing, quilting, ceramics, swimming, gardening, and just riding in the car to look around. She loved old movies, especially "Gone with the Wind," & "State Fair," and listening to Bing Crosby, Doris Day, and church music. Her favorite songs were "I'll Fly Away," "How Great Thou Art," and "Amazing Grace." She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Williston, Florida. She loved teaching Sunday school, GA's, showers, and helping with other activities at the church. She loved traveling to North Carolina, out west to Wyoming, and most of all to the Rogers Family's Little Red Cabin on Lookout Mountain anytime of the year, but Fall was her favorite. She made the best fried chicken. Her favorite foods were acre peas, coconut, BLT's, and pizza, just to name a few of many. She was a big spectator of the Florida Gators. Mrs. Rogers is survived by her sons, Tommy (Yvonne) Rogers, of Chiefland, Florida, Tim (Donna) Rogers, of Williston, Florida, Andy (Kim) of Centreville, Virginia, and sister, Janet Blackwell, of Jacksonville, Florida; 5 grandchildren, Colby Rogers of Williston, Florida, Jared (Kayla) Rogers of Seneca, South Carolina, Seth (Megan) Rogers of Chiefland, Florida, Taylor Rogers, and Blake Rogers, of Centreville, Virginia; and 3 great grandchildren, Alistair Rogers and Lola Rogers of Williston, Florida, Kingston Rogers, of Chiefland, Florida, and many nephews, nieces, and friends. Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her husband, Ferris Rogers; daughter, Chris Rogers Drew; parents, Roy and Christia Dorsett; brother, Jack Dorsett; and sister, Frances Nelms. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Williston, 339 E Noble Ave, Williston, FL 32696. Celebration of life will be Monday from 6-8 p.m. Funeral will be Tuesday, April 10, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Orange Hill Cemetery in Williston, Florida.
