Gladys Ledford

Gladys Vernell Ledford went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9th, 2018 in Chiefland, Florida. She is survived by her son Steve Ledford (Barbara) and her daughter Nancy McNeilly (John), as well as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Vernell was preceded in death by her husband Jesse, her sister Loretta Heathman, her daughters Marcia Wills and Cheryl Ledford, and her granddaughter Stacey Libengood. Vernell, known to her friends and family as Fritzie, was the youngest of two daughters born to Hollis and Iva Barger in Mitchellsville, Illinois on November 23, 1925. As a young woman she worked as a quality inspector for a stainless steel factory where she met her future husband, Jesse James Ledford. On December 8th, 1946, they eloped only after her mother came, birth certificate in hand, to prove that she was of age. They made their home in Largo, Florida in 1956 where they raised a family and worked together developing mobile home parks. Vernell was a member of the Largo Womens Club and the Eastern Star. She and Jesse enjoyed an active family life and spent their leisure time traveling the world. In April 1963 Vernell made the decision to follow Jesus and made it public through baptism at First Baptist Church of Largo. In 1992, Jesse and Vernell retired to Chiefland, Florida where they were dedicated members of Concord Baptist Church, and enjoyed country life with chickens, goats, and an occasional pony as pets for the grandkids. She is remembered fondly for her love of shopping and couponing for others. She loved her family, and her actions told you, in no uncertain terms, that you were special to her. A celebration of her life memorial service will be held for friends and family on Monday, January 15th,at 1:00 PM, visitation will be 1 hour prior starting at 12:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church of Chiefland, followed by a graveside service at Chiefland Cemetery.
