Vona Horne

Vona Donnell Horne, 73, passed away on October 5, 2016 How is someone supposed to sum up a life in just a few lines For those of you who knew Vona "Vonnie" Horne your memories of her will bring much joy. But for strangers who will read this obituary out of curiosity we would like to tell you a little bit about our precious Aunt Vonnie. Vona Donnell Horne was born to Avis and Johnnie Horne on February 18, 1943 in Chiefland, Florida. She was a proud graduate at Chiefland High School in 1961. Aunt Vonnie had several jobs throughout her lifetime but the years she worked on the Alaska pipeline was her proudest and she considered it to be the highlight of her career. While other people her age might have been starting to slow down, Aunt Vonnie started working in Gainesville at Beach Construction. You might've assumed that she would have worked in the office but that's where you would be wrong. She worked with crews right along side men. As you can see, there wasn't much our Aunt Vonnie couldn't do and we would bet that she could still win any tractor driving contest! Years after she retired, Aunt Vonnie kept in contact with and even would barbecue with coworkers that had become friends. Although we think the world of our Aunt we believe it's a true testament to her character and work ethic that she made lifelong friends along her career path. Now we are at the good part! Aunt Vonnie loved animals and when we say loved we mean she ADORED animals. Her pets (furry babies) were the envy of the neighborhood. Once our dogs realized what they were missing at their own houses, Rooster and Buster would make the daily trek across a 20 acre field just to get some love from Aunt Vonnie. Even our own pets understood that when Aunt Vonnie loved you she loved you well. So whether she would drive her tractor over to your house to mow, come help fix things at your house, cook you a delicious meal, made you your favorite dessert, gift you with her famous peanut brittle, or even watch over you through her binoculars, there was no way you didn't feel loved. She never did these things out of obligation, but because she truly wanted to. She would tell us all the time "I want to, it's my pleasure". Well it's safe to say that the pleasure has been all ours. If you never had the honor of meeting our Aunt Vonnie we are truly sorry because you have missed out on a blessing. She was preceded in death by her sweet parents, Avis and Jonnie Horne and her younger brother, Richard "Polie" Horne. Aunt Vonnie is survived by her older sister, Avalene (Jerry) Smith, her niece, Sherry McElroy, nephews; Sammy (Sally) Smith and Todd (Brandy) Horne, her great nieces; Kalee (Brett) Hanchey, Savannah (Justin) Robin, and Claire Horne and great-nephews Brian McElroy, Flint Smith and Matthew, Lance, Aidan, and Ethan Horne and her sweet great-great nephews, Landry and Tyler Robin. And last but not least she was survived by her beloved pets; Sarah, Hannah, Motor-man, Bella-man, Toby, Granite, Riley, Basil, and Ella. She will be truly missed by all that knew her. We will celebrate her life on Monday, October 10th at Knauff Funeral Home in Chiefland, Fl. Visitation is from 1:00-2:00pm and the service at 2:00pm. Aunt Vonnie's final resting place will be beside her parents at Long Pond Cemetery.
