Obituary

Mrs. Erma Hinote Hicks, age 97, of Bronson, Florida passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on August 20th, in Bronson. She was surrounded by her loving family. Erma was born in Miami, Florida on November 5th, 1928. Her parents were Augustus and Tempy Hinote. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Jack Hicks and her son Larry Hicks. She is also survived by her children Sandy Kestner (Gary) of Fayetteville, Ar., Debra Grant (Craig) of Bronson, Fl., Jackie Hicks of Chiefland, Fl., and daughter-in-law Gail Hicks of Chiefland, Fla. She is also survived by her grandchildren Troy Kestner (Holly) Chris Kestner (Angie) both of Fayetteville, Ar. Amy Palmer (John) Newberry, Fl. Vicki (JR) Olavarria Gainesville, Fl. Kristi (David)Cannon of Chiefland, Fl., Tracey (Travis) Chiefland, Fl., Hayden (Samara)Grant, Kari Hicks of Gainesville, Fl, Ryan Hicks of Jacksonville, Fl., and Wes (Julie) Grant of Trenton, Fl., She had many great and great, great grands as well as many children from her daycare who considered her their Nanna too!

Erma enjoyed growing up in Miami, which she says was a much different place than it is today! She told many fascinating stories! She met Jack in the second grade and it was love at first sight! They married when she was 15 and he was 18. He was in the navy at that time. After Jack got out of the Navy they lived in Miami for several years where Jack had a Paving business. Erma tended to the bookkeeping for Jack. They later found Levy County by way of Jack working on roads after a storm hit Cedar Key In the 1960’s.

Erma then went to work at the insurance business for Cotton State Ins. Company owned by Donald Holmes, in Chiefland Fla. For around 11 years.

Later, Erma started keeping children in her home for working parents. This later evolved into Nanna’s Place Academy, Inc, a thriving daycare that’s still in existence today!

Erma enjoyed sewing and mending clothes, Gardening and loved her flowers. Erma loved spending time with family and friends.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Bronson on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior. A private burial will be held for the family at a later time. The family would appreciate donations made to the Christ Centered “ One More Child.org”, in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements are under the care of Weems & Sons Funeral Homes.
