Obituary
Sergeant Jonathan "Jonny" Hector Rivera, 26, passed away on March 8, 2025, in Gainesville, Florida. Born on July 13, 1998, in Williston, Florida, Jonny lived a life marked by dedication, creativity, and service. Jonny proudly served as an Army Ranger and airborne combat medic with the 75th Ranger Regiment, 3rd Battalion. His devotion to his fellow soldiers and his country was steadfast. After years of service, including a lengthy deployment to Afghanistan, he was honorably discharged in 2022, carrying with him both scars and successes from his military career. Beyond his service, Jonny found solace and expression in music. He not only composed original pieces but also built a home studio where his artistic vision could take flight. His passion for music was a testament to his creativity and determinationqualities that those who knew him will always cherish. Jonny met the kind, beautiful and intelligent Weilu Liu while she was pursuing her masters in piano in college. They fell in love and were married on July 4, 2021. They connected over music. They were building a life together as a unit. Jonny is survived by the Rivera family, including his parents, Hector and Karen, and his siblings: Elizabeth, Jordan, Josiah, Ana, and Benjamin. He was predeceased by his wife Weilu Liu. His family mourns the loss of both a son and daughter, a brother and sister, trusting in the goodness of God to bring them peace. A funeral service to honor Jonny's life will take place later this week. If you would like to attend, please contact 352-528-3481 for more details. Jonnys memory will live on through the love of his family and friends. The same community whose parents and children have grown up together is now showing so much love and lifting each other up during this difficult time. Many veterans struggle with mental health after a traumatic deployment. Oftentimes, they feel obligated to take on the struggle alone. Because of their dedication to personal strength and the stigma around mental health, many veterans refuse treatment. I am so sorry to hear of this terrible, huge loss. I remember him growing up together w Ryan & Jonny ( the other Jonny 😉) class. He was always so sweet & kind. What a handsome man he became. There are many things we don't have answers to...only God knows. May He give you His Peace & strength durring this time. Que Dios les bendiga mucho.
