Obituary

William Jackson Whitener II "Will" passed away peacefully on September 19, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. He was 76 years old. Born on June 5, 1948 in Gainesville, Florida at Alachua General Hospital, he is preceded in death by his loving parents, Robert and Virginia Whitener. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 54 years, Jennifer Long Whitener "Jenny"; his sons, William Jackson Whitener III "Jack", Michael Paul Whitener "Mike" and wife, Kristin Whitener; grandchildren, Leah Faith Whitener, Landon Paul Whitener, William Jackson Whitener IV "Liam"; sister, Katherine Whitener; brother in laws, Retired Rear Admiral Noah Long "Buddy" and wife, Marilyn, William Long "Bill" and wife, JoAnne; sister in law, Angelia Long Sanders "Angel" and husband, Danny; and nieces and nephews. He was affectionately called Pappy by most everyone who knew him. Dubbed Mayor of 51st Street, or Neighborhood Watch, he would ride his golf cart "Bluebird" up and down the neighborhood road throughout the day to ensure everyone and everything was well. In his early years he loved to fish, collect arrowheads, and he became an avid sportsman. He enjoyed his hunting camp in Gulf Hammock and playfully nicknamed it "Sand Gnat Ranch". His favorite was green in all of his clothes. He was a military brat that traveled the world with family. They resided in France and Japan when he was very young. He worked for the telephone company for 35 years through many different company changes. He was Baptist by faith. He loved unconditionally. A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at the Orange Hill Cemetery in Williston at 10:00 AM, weather permitting. Judge Joe Smith will officiate.
