Obituary
Dr. David W. Meeks, Jr., of Chiefland and Suwannee, passed away on October 3, 2023 following an extended illness. He was 82 years old. David was born on October 31, 1940 to David W. Meeks, Sr. and Marjorie Beauchamp Meeks. He grew up in Chiefland and graduated from Chiefland High School, Florida State University, and the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating vet school, David and his wife, Sarah, returned home and opened Meeks Animal Hospital (later renamed Suwannee Valley Veterinary Clinic) in Chiefland in 1968. Dr. Meeks was a vet to the large and small animals of the Tri-County area for nearly forty years. David enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family at the hunting camp. He was an avid fisherman and was fortunate enough to be able to spend a lifetime fishing in the Suwannee and Waccasassa rivers and all the coastline in between. He and Sarah enjoyed many years of doting on grandchildren, birdwatching and travelling together. David was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Meeks, and by his parents, David W. Meeks, Sr. and Marjorie Meeks. He is survived by his children, David W. Meeks, III and his wife, Debbie Meeks, Jon Meeks, and Patti Lee Meeks and her husband, David Renaud; his grandchildren, Truitt Renaud and his wife, Mariah Renaud, Vance Renaud, Eliza Renaud, Jack Meeks and Emma Meeks; and his great-granddaughter, Blair Renaud. He is also survived by his sister, Loy Ann Mann and her family, as well as many much-loved cousins and friends. A visitation will be held on Friday, October 6th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Knauff Funeral Home in Chiefland. Interment will be private. I can only say that in many your loss is mine as well.Please know that you are constantly in my thoughts and prayers, especially at this difficult time. Dr. Meeks was an icon in the community at large and even more so by pet owners in our area. May his spirit continue in us by his example.

I have just discovered Davids obituary as I sit here looking for information about David in hopes that I could contact him. David was my room mate during our first semester at Florida State in 1958-59. After our first year, we pledged separate fraternities and had infrequent contact thereafter. But I remember him as a good and kind person whose home I visited in Chiefland during our trip to the first-ever FSU/Florida football game in 1958. Ive just watched the 64th edition of that competition, and Im sorry that I didnt reach out to him sooner. May he rest in peace.
