Mary Wojcik

Mary Alice Stegall was born in rural Early County Georgia in January of 1940, one of 11 children. The family moved to Fort McCoy and then Williston Florida, where she graduated from high school in 1958. In 1969 Mary became a mother, adopting an infant boy and raising him as her own. Mary worked her way through college and graduated from the University of Florida Fisher School of Accounting in 1981. While in college Mary sponsored a friend for U.S. citizenship. After graduation she worked her way up from part-time bookkeeper to President of Thomas Oil Company, a successful major brand oil company in Gainesville. After many years growing the business, she transitioned into positions working for the State of Florida and University of Florida. In her professional life she was well served by a fierce sense of independence and resolve to face both small and large challenges head on. Between 2002 and 2005 Mary became a grandmother twice over. Of her many positions in life, being Grandmother was her most loved occupation. She dedicated herself to her granddaughters, and happily worked to encourage their independence in thought, and belief in their own abilities to lead meaningful lives. While her spirit was never far from her family in Williston, over the years Marys life took her to Groton, Anchorage, Juneau, Dafter MI, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Brooklyn NY, and Gainesville. She returned to Williston in 2012. Mary was an avid square dancer, and a profoundly dedicated family historian. Over decades she performed research, traveling across the South visit archives, libraries, courthouses and cemeteries. She amassed a comprehensive history of the Stegall and McLendon families in the South. Throughout her life Marys family and faith remained the center of her strength. Most of her family still resides in the Williston area. In her final time with us here, she was surrounded by those who love and support her, and with whom she shares so much. Mary Alice will be remembered by those who knew her as determined, accomplished in the face of adversity, quick to smile and laugh, a strong mother, sister and aunt, and dedicated to family and God. She is survived by her husband Dr. Daniel Wojcik, son Scott McEwan, granddaughters Erin and Kate McEwan, bothers David and John Stegall, sisters Sarah Stoel and Linda Henry, and countless nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at the First Baptist Church in Williston at 4:00 pm with a visitation one hour prior.
