Obituary

Gordon Larry Slaughter, 83, of Fanning Springs, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on February 19, 2026. He was born on December 28, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Gordon Virgil Slaughter and Mildred Furman Slaughter.

Gordon spent his early years in Cedar Key, Florida, where he attended and graduated from Cedar Key High School. Instilling in him a lifelong love of hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. Cedar Key was not just where he grew up; it was where he learned the value of hard work, family, and community.

In 1965, Gordon began his career with the Gainesville Fire Department. For twenty dedicated years, he faithfully served his community as a firefighter/EMT, retiring in 1985. As a firefighter, he was a member of the Florida State Fireman's Association. He carried the heart of a servant. Brave, dependable, and deeply committed, both in his profession and in his personal life.

In 1967, he welcomed his son, Larry, into the world. In May of 1970, he married the love of his life, Nancy Squires. Together they built a beautiful life and shared 55 years of marriage. Years filled with laughter, devotion, and unwavering commitment. Their journey carried them through homes in Gainesville, a home they built in Dunnellon, time spent in Bell, and finally to Fanning Springs. Wherever they lived, Gordon gathered friends along the way. He never met a stranger, only future friends.

In 2017, Gordon became a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Chiefland, Florida, where his brother, Billy, serves as pastor.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, His brother, Tommy Slaughter; and his sister, Linda Moody.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Slaughter; his son, Larry (Vickie) Opper; his brother, William “Billy” Slaughter; his sister, Renotia Hines; and his brother, Joey (Candy) Slaughter. He was a proud grandfather to Daniel Opper and Kari Frink, and a joyful great-grandfather to Adeline and Noah Frink. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will forever cherish his presence in their lives.

He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.

A funeral service will be held at Weems & Sons Funeral Home of Chiefland on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at 11am. The family will receive friends one hour prior. The service will be officiated by Reverend Billy Slaughter and burial will follow at the Jonesville Cemetery in Newberry.

Arrangements are entrusted to Weems & Sons Funeral Home of Chiefland, 715 West Park Avenue, Chiefland, Florida 32626

When I was little (about 7 or 8 y/o for this story) I spent lots of time with Uncle Gordon and Aunt Nancy. I'm an only child so I carried around a tape recorder I would talk to, or record random conversations, music, etc... and on one of our trips to North Carolina with Uncle Gordon driving, Aunt Nancy and I were in the front seat, and Uncle Gordon's mom and my Grams (Aunt Nancy mom) were in the back seat. You can hear Grams, at a little distance, at one point say "ohhhhhh there's a gopher" (turtle crossing the road) and then you hear a really loud bang and everyone sucking in their breath...it's really quiet for a couple seconds and then, because she was beside me it comes up louder, Aunt Nancy said, with that oh well voice she has, "there WAS a gopher". Now at the time there was nothing special, but later at the cabin I played that recording to them because they were talking about hitting the turtle, and I've NEVER seen all 4 of them laugh so hard in my life at that point, at that little recording of that moment in time. By the time we returned home about 2 weeks later they had me play that so many times, and then wanted it played to everyone. I'm almost 56 now, and thru the years we still talked about that tape and laugh. I have that cassette in a box now to be put onto a disc or flash so I can play it again. I'm extremely sad that Uncle Gordon didn't get the chance to hear it again. But I will get Aunt Nancy to hear it. If you bring this story up to her now I know she will chuckle, but playing the tape for her I hope makes her laugh as hard as she did back then. I just wish I could have played it for them together. Even though I was that young, that moment and the hilarious hard laughing from them both for nearly 50 years simply talking about it is a treasured memory for me. I had no idea back then that this tape was that funny, and would still be the last time we talked about it maybe 2-3 years ago sitting on the back porch. I miss and love you Uncle Gordon ❤️
